Lesson 3 The alphabeth d When you say the "th"-sound in "the" you get some kind of d-sound. When you say the English "th"-sound you put the tip of your tongue on the upper teeth. When saying the Danish d-sound you have to put the tip of your tongue down on your lower teeth and say the d-sound with the back of your tongue. This is called the soft d. The hard d is pronounced just as in English as in "date". The d is always hard when standing in the beginning of the word and always soft when standing in the middle or in the end of a word. dis (fog, mist) pronounced as "is" with a hard d in front of it. (Very surprising eh? :) ) side (page) pronounced si-de. The i is sustained and the e is pronounced like the e in spise. Remember this is a soft d. NB: This e sound has a tendency to dissappear (just as in "spise") de (they) pronounced "di". Remember that e can sound like the other vowels. Don't be affraid of this word.
